support in Britain, it is necessary to consider the nature of victimology, the social theories that have supported the call for victim support programs, and the progression of social support
services and training for support personnel that have come into play as a part of the criminal justice response. These factors provide a basis for understanding the conceptual and
practical applications of victim support. Victimology and Criminology Victimology, or the study of victimization, has been closely linked to criminology for centuries, but social
theorists have focused on victimology as a separate sociological area since the 1970s (van Dijk, 2002). Victimology, as institutionalized by the World Society of Victimology, may be
defined as : the scientific study of the extent, nature and causes of criminal victimization, its consequences for the persons involved and the reactions thereto by society, in particular the
police and the criminal justice system as well as voluntary workers and professional helpers (van Dijk, 2002). Prior to 1970, victims were assessed as participants in the criminal
