Grisaille by Ingres and Tahitian Women Bathing by Gauguin. Discussion The pictures are both of nude women, but there are far more similarities than differences. First, of course, the Gauguin
jumps off the canvas due to Gauguins signature use of color, while the Ingres is done in shades of gray (the word "grisaille" means gray). The Ingres is a portrait
of one women while there are several in the Gauguin. In addition, the odalisque is reclining on a couch in an interior room while the Tahitian women are outdoors. But
these are obvious and superficial differences; there are others that are more subtle. We begin with the odalisque. As noted, she is reclining on a couch with her back to
the viewer, but she is not relaxed, or at least not entirely. In fact, she is a study in contrasts. She is on a luxurious chaise surrounded by rich draperies;
the word "odalisque" refers to a slave in a harem, so we can assume that this is her chamber in the sultans palace. The silks that surround her also speak
to the lushness of such surroundings. But the woman herself is not at ease. As a concubine, she is used to being an object of desire, but here she seems
shy and even a bit hostile. In his book on Ingres, Robert Rosenblum describes one of Ingres odalisques (in an almost identical painting but in color) as exhibiting "Oriental languor
... countered by points of extreme tension."1 This tension is seen in the turn of her head and the stiffness of her neck; the fact that her left arm is
flexed and bearing a lot of her weight; and the strange way she has her left leg wrapped over her right.2 But by far the strangest thing about the painting
