in Kansas is met with the struggle between good and evil when the movie begins. A neighbor woman, Elvira Gulch is harassing her dog Toto. Dorothy and Toto
are visibly upset. Ms Gulch claims that Toto causes harm and should be put to sleep. She threatens to have the Sheriff come and take the dog if
he is not given to her. Dorothy and her family are taken aback by the threat of Ms Gulch, and Dorothys family gives the neighbor the dog, which she
places in her basket and rides off with on her bicycle. This is an example of the fight between good and evil. Dorothy is a sweet, innocent child.
It is her lot in life to live on a farm with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry and three farmhands. She embodies a "good" spirit. She loves
her dog greatly, and desperately begs to keep the dog. The old crone is mean and unyielding. Ms Gulch embodies an "evil" spirit. Totos escape is the
first instance of good overcoming evil. When Toto escapes from Ms Gulchs basket, he immediately goes to his mistress. Dorothy, although
relieved at having Toto back, faces the conundrum of what to do. She knows that Ms Gulch will only return, or worse the sheriff will come to take Toto.
She tries to make the choice of the "better of two evils". Running away will only bring heartache for her family, but staying will put her in the
position of giving up her most prized position, her beloved Toto. Dorothy decides that she and Toto must run away to a land where she can not be tormented
