the Wizard of Oz. Most have seen the film and some have read the book, and while that is the case, it should be noted that there are a few
differences between the book and the movie. This is often the case as filmmakers take license to do things that were never intended by the original author. In respect to
The Wizard of Oz, much of the film remains true to the childrens novel, but there are some essential differences. One difference is in terms of mood, or tone. The
filmed version was very scary for young audiences whereas the book written by Baum does not have such fierce elements. Part of that is attributable to the medium. It is
much scarier to see a witch on the screen than to read about it in the book, but the other is attributable to the authors intent. Part of the proof
of this is that the book portrays the bad witch as merely a minor character whereas the filmed version makes her larger than life. Certainly, in the 1939 film, the
bad witch is a major player. While Baum did not intend for his characters to be frightening, he perhaps also did not intend for the work to provide the
surreal aura that Emerald City became in the filmed classic. The film was a musical and this is an essential difference, thus adding to the emotion and the larger than
life quality that the film possesses. Dyer expresses the notion that musicals imply that the world of the narrative is utopian and that the background suggests that there are places
where song and dance is in the air (231). Emerald City, where the Wizard lives is such a place. Thus, there is entertainment value as the utopian ideology thrives.
