strong evolution. Not only was the technology rapidly evolving, so too was the mindset of the artists themselves and the public that they were targeting. Culture was changing
and one of the integral components of that change was graphic design. During the 1970s popular culture both inspired and was inspired by
graphic design. Graphic designers were blurring the distinction that had previously existed between fine art and art that was produced with distinct commercial reasons in mind (Fiell and Fiell,
2003). Fiell and Fiell (2003, 24) note that a: "long-standing complicity of the graphic
design profession with big business has led to the rapid expansion and globalization of commercial culture"
At the same time, however, the strong influence that good art has not just on mass culture but the industry that shapes mass culture must be acknowledged.
The 1970s in Britain were a time of social unrest and a weakened economy. The art of the time sought variably sought to remind people of better times and
to inspire them for the future but it also commonly held a political or cultural message. As this new art made its way into broad public acceptance commercial interests
began to pick up on it and encourage its production. The British punk movement became a particularly influential factor in this relationship. Bestley and Noble (2004) are just
