The telecommunications industry is vast. It encompasses most of our modern world, in fact. Indeed, in describing the technological classification of "telecommunications" Berkeley
(2004) observes that telecommunication: "consists of the full range of human conduct involved in institutionalizing
the electronic transmission of information" Unfortunately, however, the telecommunications industry is not quite as cutting
edge as many of us perceive it to be. It is characterized in some ways, in fact, by reluctance more so than by progressiveness. This can be demonstrated
through an examination of more than one aspect of the industry. One of the more interesting of these aspects, however, is the use of telecommunications for data in a
mobile environment. In one sense we have made tremendous progress in this realm in just the last couple of years. In another, unfortunately, we are still crawling along
slowly trying to implements the processes, procedure, and infrastructure that can allow us to take full advantage of the digital age even when we are far removed from the physical
accoutrements of that age. One of the primary problems we face in trying to utilize telecommunications in the mobile environment is the insistence
on the industry for contracts. This presents an unfair situation for a world that is changing, or at least has the capacity to change, with the speed of light!
