A people that call themselves the Winnemen Wintu of California are learning first hand that Native American
rights are distinct from those of most Americans. These people claim relationship to the Winnemen Wintu people that farmed and fished a four river region of Northern California for
generations prior to the arrival of the first non-Native to their lands (Hildebrandt and Darcangelo, 2008). The name "Winneman Wintu", in fact, means "middle water" (Hildebrandt and Darcangelo,
2008). It signifies the deep connection the people had with their environment. The connectedness between land and people, however, was radically severed in the mid 1900s when the
government decided to dam the rivers to, among other reasons, to regulate the states water flow by damming the McCloud, Pitt and Sacramento Rivers. One result was
the loss of a reported ninety percent of this tribes ancestral lands (Franco, 2008). The connection that exists between the Winnemen Wintu and their land is being threatened once
again today as plans are underway to expand the Dam and the area the reservoir will cover. A very critical point in this scenario is that they proposed expansion
of this project will now likely imperil additional graves that bear the remains of the ancestors of the Winnemen Wintu.
