youthful passion and understand what characterized a love that was true and lasting. This shrewd and insightful woman would have undoubtedly had much to say regarding the love poems
composed by Sappho (630 B.C. - ?) and Catullus (84-54 B.C.). Each of these poets would provide deeply personal odes to love in their celebrated verses, in which they
reveal the heights and depths of the emotions that are generated by love. Catullus composed a variety of lyrical love songs for his mistress Lesbia, which run the gamut
of deep emotions. In lyric 85, Catullus states categorically he feels both love and hate for Lesbia as a result of what he has describes as emotional abuse in
subsequent verses. In lyric 87, he proclaims, "No other woman can truthfully say she was cherished as much as Lesbia was when I was her lover. Never, in
any such bond, was fidelity greater than mine, in my love for you, ever discovered (Catullus 810). He then goes on to suggest that that the most important component
of the marriage contract is the fidelity or loyalty between two individuals, of which he believes he has provided Lesbia in abundance. While the couple is not married in
the legal sense to each other (their bonds of matrimony are with others), it becomes obvious that Catullus believes the level of commitment he has demonstrated to Lesbia represents a
spiritual marriage that is bound by undying love. For Sappho, with deep love there is the pain of jealousy that accompanies affection that is not reciprocated. In her lyric,
Like the Very Gods in My Sight is He, it becomes obvious the poetess worships her beloved like a God: "Like the very gods in my sight is he who
