firm grip of the entire country was because any attempts at open resistance to Nazism were immediately dealt with ruthlessly: consequently, those who opposed Hitler were obliged to do so
clandestinely. In addition, the Nazis maintained strict control over the media, which meant that there was no opportunity for the standpoint of other groups to be put forward or for
the party to be challenged. This media control also had the effect of allowing the Nazis to conceal many of the atrocities which they were perpetrating against minority groups such
as the Jews: since these were never exposed in the media, many of the general population would not have been aware of them unless they were personally involved with the
individuals concerned. However, since there were numerous underground resistance
movements in the country, it is clear that there were those who understood what was happening, and sought ways of disseminating information to the population at large and organising resistance
to the Nazis in general. It is also evident that these groups were acting out of ethical and altruistic motives: the Nazi regime had been extremely effective in improving socio-economic
conditions in Germany and gaining respect for the country on an international level, so in many ways it was not in the interests of the population to stand against them.
After the humiliation of the Treaty of Versailles and the subsequent economic depression into which the country was plunged, the German people might have been expected to welcome any political
movement which led to an improvement in the country, and to support the government rather than opposing it.
