quintessential modern man: rational, verbal, scientific, and secular. At the same time, Thomas implies that Freud is only providing half of the story of our lives and times,
the Freud, as he describes himself, is "a mariner whose gaze is so concentrated on the lighthouse that" at best, he misses "the fair harbor opening in the cliffs" (195-196),
and at worst, he "runs on to the rocks in the engulfing darkness" (8). Inherent in this view, then, is Thomas assertion that there is another half to the
story, that Freuds perspective is singular and that there is duplicity to the conceptual view of man. Thomas views on
this process, whether considered within the context of existing authorship on modernity or relative to the psychological progression and development of ideals, relates to the attempts by Thomas to set
the elements of Freudian psychology to the test of inherent application. "Since a sizable part of this novels ambition is to demythologize Freudian explanations by subjecting them to a
brutal encounter with actual events, the extension into history becomes imperative, although, as we shall see, the authors recourse to the historical involves him in the remythologizing of experience, even
as he attempts to free it of earlier layers of rationalization and interpretation" (Rosefeld 1). Psychoanalytical investigations, then, provide a basis for considering both sides of the Freudian perspective.
Thomas, for example, spends a significant portion of the novel outlining the "representation of Elizabeth Erdman as a victim of severe sexual
