these two theaters is greatly influenced by its warfighting techniques. The paper further argues that the western way of war influences US actions in terms of military technology, superior discipline
and choice of the terms of engagement. Discussion In his introduction to The Cambridge History of Warfare, which he entitled The Western Way of War, Geoffrey Parker explains that all
cultures develop their own style of warfare depending on things like geography, population and other demographic factors.1 Parker says that what he calls the western way of war has
developed five separate components, including superior technology, strong discipline, a long military tradition, the ability to be fluid and change military practice to meet current conditions; and the financial backing
to make war.2 In the case of the current involvements, the US military has been successful due in large part to its sophisticated weapons systems and technology. However, there are
other considerations. Baron de Jomini wrote: "The superiority of armament may increase the chances of success in war: it does not, of itself, gain battles, but it is a great
element of success."3 That is, while armament increases a commanders chances of winning a battle, it is not the only element necessary for success. In the case of U.S. operations,
the latest military equipment is enhanced by applying the latest organizational structure equipped with advanced technology. Everyone now is familiar with such devices as cruise missiles and smart bombs that
can pinpoint enemy locations and destroy enemy troops with surgical precision. Still, rugged terrain in Afghanistan and relentless heat and sand in Iraq can sometimes render technology useless. That is
