Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction The "Western tradition" in novels is generally considered to be the tradition that developed in Greece and has been handed down in the West, as opposed to works that come from the East. The Western tradition includes mythology, Romance, and other similar subjects. This paper compares the book Lupita Manana to a classic of Western tradition, The Odyssey. Discussion The influence of Western tradition: This is seen most clearly in the fact that at its heart, the novel is a basic quest story. Two young people set out to find something, or recover something, and have various adventures, assisted by mentors and facing enemies, along the way. This is the basic form of the Odyssey as well: Odysseus leaves Troy to try and get home to Ithaca (find something); and has numerous adventures with evil doers (the Cyclops, Calypso) as well as those who wish to help him (Athena) along the way. At the end he regains his kingdom and his queen. In Lupita Manana, Lupita Torres and her brother Salvador come to the United States illegally to try and find work because their father has drowned; they are befriended by relatives (mentors) and threatened by the coyotes (smugglers) as well as the Border Patrol (enemies). Salvador is caught and deported, but Lupita hides from the police and remains in the United States, determined to learn English and make money for her family (Beatty, 1981).
