in the New York metropolitan area would run its course. Will more die of the disease? Will the spraying of malathion affect the health of the residents? Of course,
New York was not the only region dealing with the problem but due to the fact that the city was so large, the spraying of the mosquitoes in an attempt
to prevent the virus from spreading, had created controversy. But when all was said and done, the disease only took a handful of lives. Things could have been far worse.
In order to prevent the possibility of a mass epidemic, Rudolph Guiliani and others in the New York metropolitan region released helicopters to spray insecticide on a large scale in
order to oust infected mosquitoes. At first, the outbreak was thought to be St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) (Enserink, 1999a). The DNA sequence of the virus that caused the
epidemic of brain inflammation in and around New York City during the summer of 1999 was in fact West Nile virus (Enserink, 1999b). The viruss genome is almost identical to
that of a West Nile strain which was found in Israel during 1998, suggesting that its origin is Middle Eastern (1999b). Encephalitis, in general, is an inflammation of the
