But as the case progressed, opinion began to shift, until he was finally acquitted and the judge apologized to him from the bench. But perhaps the most startling development in the case was the revelation that the FBI bungled the investigation to a degree not seen since the antics of the Keystone Cops. This paper addresses several questions with concern to the security issues raised by this case, namely: how can IT managers keep information secure? What sort of IT and managerial policies can be implemented to prevent or minimize theft of secret information by an insider? Why have federal agencies failed to prevent such thefts? The paper also considers the steps of a properly conducted digital forensics inquiry and the type of information sought in such an investigation, and how that information as well as the investigation itself, can be safeguarded. The paper gives examples of critical mistakes made in the investigation, and finally, considers how privileged and personal information can be kept confidential in an age of data mining and AI applications. It also tries to find a balance between a need for security and the need for individual privacy.
