adventurer who delights in taking her readers along for the joy ride. Shreve admits that for her, "Taking risks is part of the pleasure" (Papinchak 26). Her fifth novel, The Weight of Water, was a particularly risky venture because, as she explains, "I couldnt know until the end, until the very last puzzle piece was in place, whether or not the structure worked. It was either going to work very well or not at all. I didnt see any middle ground" (Papinchak 26). There is a parallel plot which Shreve masterfully interweaves into a complex tapestry of tragedy and intrigue. The tale begins in 1995, purposely calculated to coincide with the conclusion of the double-murder trial of O.J. Simpson, and is told by Jean Janes, a photographer who has been contracted by a magazine to write about the notorious (and real-life) "Smuttynose murders," which occurred on March 5, 1873 (Taylor 243). The narrative offers so many details about the geographical region known as the Isles of Shoals, which are situated off the coast of New Hampshire that it reads as a travelogue. Author and The New York Times critic Susan Kenney wrote in her review of The Weight of Water, "There is so much factual information about the Shoals here -- geographical, historical, nautical, meteorological -- that you might well take it along on your next cruise as the definitive guide to the islands" (30). This intense narrative detail is essential to the unfolding of the plot and the interaction of novels characters, past and present.
