Paper Store, Inc. by K. Von Huben 10/2010 Please Introduction The short story The Web of Circumstance is a glimpse of
life in the South 15 years after the end of the Civil War. This paper is a close reading and interpretation of the end of the story. Discussion The protagonist
of the story is Ben Davis, a black man who is a well-respected blacksmith. Unfortunately, despite his success with his business and the fact that he owns property-or perhaps because
of his success, which threatens some whites-he is accused of stealing a whip and found guilty. In comparison with the other crimes heard by the court, his is a very
minor offense, of which he is in fact innocent, but hes black and this is the South of 1880, and he goes to prison for five years. When hes released,
he goes home, only to find his wife his gone, his property lost and his children both dead. As he struggles to come to terms with this reality, we pick
up the story. Over his years in prison he has built up great resentment, which quickly turned to hatred, for the man who accused him of stealing. That individual is
Colonel Thornton, and he has a young daughter. Ben makes a club from a tree branch and hides in the bushes outside Thorntons house. But he is exhausted and falls
asleep, only to be awakened by a little girl who hands him a drink of water. Its Thorntons daughter, and here begins the close reading. The girl is described
