skepticism of government from which the country would never recover. Considering then the impact of these events, its important to gain insight into the conditions which surrounded this historical
event, and the atmosphere which encouraged such action. Nixon was determined not to become prey of the same anti-war protestors
that had destroyed Lyndon Johnson, and often spoke publicly about brining "peace with honor" (Sussman, 2003). He heavily peppered his speeches with words like "honesty", "hard-working", and "law-abiding" -
all used in reference to the citizens whom he addressed and who, at least in the beginning, were unquestioning of him and his motives (Sussman, 2003). The people believed
him and loved him, as he inspired the country and was personified as a man of the people. It was believed he could relate to the average man, and
the country felt as if he understood their struggles. Interestingly, before the Watergate scandal, the Nixon administration was known for
their almost paranoid attention to detail when it came to matters of public image, and did everything they could to avoid negative publicity (The Watergate Scandal, 2003). Clearly this
system was in place to prevent revealing "unpleasant" aspects of the administration. "That atmosphere of paranoia and suspicion was fueled by the leaking of the Pentagon Papers, defense department
documents concerning the United States involvement in the Vietnam War" (The Watergate Scandal, 2003). As a result of this leak,
