Wide" is a story of the difference one man can make. Set on the nearly deserted Yamacraw Island located some twenty miles off the South Carolina coast, this book
chronicles the experiences of the few poor black families that live there. It covers the manner in which their lives have been impacted by the pollution of our modern
industries. Previously subsisting primarily off the bounties of the sea these families find their lifeways, indeed their very existence, challenged. There lives will be changed not by an
abatement of that pollution but by the arrival of a white stranger to their all but deserted shores. While the people of Yamacraw
can do little about the industrial wastes which poor into their waters via the Savannah River from the industries located on the mainland, they can learn to persevere through adaptation,
to learn a new way to live. They do so only with the help of a young white teacher. Pat Conroy is a school teacher who takes charge
of much more than just the academic education children of Yamacraw. He is a teacher who gently takes the hearts of the people into his grasp and aggressively breathes
a new breath of hope into those hearts. Written as a first-person account "The Water is Wide" revolves around social change in the
aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement in 1969. It details the struggles of a community to subsist when, although the laws are in place to allow that subsistence, the
