up. Rather, the future will incorporate technology, but it may not be as highly technical as people believe. In an article entitled "Warehouse of the Future," Graham (2003) begins as
follows: "The warehouse of the future will not be technology-dependent but technology enhanced - a blend of technology, machine and manpower" (p. 50). Indeed, the human element is part of
the picture. The article goes on to explain that supply chain software will be integral to the future of warehousing and that warehouses will be highly automated (Graham, 2003).
Also, warehouses of the future will eliminate redundancy and while workers will not be as numerous, they will be better qualified for their positions (Graham, 2003). It seems that in
the future, efficiency will be valued above all else. The idea that orders will be smaller and accommodate "just in time" buyers is conveyed (Graham, 2003). The author sums it
up and puts it this way: "There also will be a convergence of software and people. Warehouse workers will be wired into the system through touch screen or voice-activated technology"
(Graham, 2003, p.50). Further, fulfillment functions will be network based (Graham, 2003). It appears that the author speculates that the world will continue on its current course, but as the
future unfolds, there will be a change. That is, today one can see that there is a great deal of connectivity, but there are few ways to filter information. On
some level, there is too much information and too much connectivity without attention to quality. Yet, there are tasks that are simply impossible now that software will see feasible
in the future. Indeed, there are many things people can do today on their computers that they would never have thought to do even five years ago. Graham (2003) explains:
