In terms of looking at the involvement of the United States in the past, and the global conditions and events that may have led up to our present day situation,
Ledeen argues that much of what is taking place right now can be traced back to the Cold War and the relationship that the United States had with the Soviet
Union. He argues that the Soviet Union essentially stood at the top and center of terror in the world. But, he also argues that it was not until the Khomeini
revolution, which took place back in the 1970s, that true Islamic terrorism began to truly evolve and develop into a serious threat. He indicates that it was Khomeini who
truly began to develop the powerfully negative attitudes about foreigners and anyone who was not of the Islamic people. He encouraged violence and the reverence of the Islamic way of
life which also included a sense of power in the idea of being a martyr for the cause. One author tells us that Ledeen believes Al Qaeda "represents
