of social change there was not unified agreement by those seeking change regarding exactly what they change should be and how it should be achieved. The WSPU can be seen
as one of the militant movements, and while there was the aim of achieving votes for women, the general perception that the organization sought to leverage was that of a
more feminist approach, where it was not simply a matter of gaining the vote in an equal footing with men, suffrage for women was seen as essential to overcome a
stigma that has been placed on women by the patriarchal society (Pugh, 2002). The WSPU was founded as a result of frustration in the way that the constitutionalist NUWSS was
tied to the Labour party and a general belief that the support for womens suffrage was half hearted (Smith). The approached adopted by the WSPU was therefore inherently more
radical, and would lead to a higher level of militancy. However, right from the beginning there was a departure from the NUWSS in terms of the methods used to gain
support. The WSPU had a greater appeal to working women with the slogan votes for women, this is a simple slogan, but also one that had the potential to be
misleading (Smith). The political stance of both the WSPU and NUWSS was to gain votes equal to men, which meant that working class women would fail to get the
vote even if the WSPU demand was met by the government. It is worth noting that although less published there were other complimentarily movements at the time, such as the
