rich working class. The ideology may have fairness at its core, but even looking at this it is possible to see that Marxism could be seen as vulnerable is Marx
to a charge of economism. To assess this vulnerability, if and to what extent it may exist, we first need to consider what is meant by economism, and then how
the ideas of Karl Marx may be caught within this definition. Economism is a political theory, where economics are seen as the
main driving force. The effect of this is that other factors, such as culture and nationally are no longer relevant. Taking this further the actions of a group, such as
a trade union or a political organisation will then be the drive to improve the economic position of the members, leading to a better standard of living (Hallas, 1973). When
term is used in relation to Russia during the Tsars time it is the theory that the working class should have their own economic well being as their primary goal.
Political reform unrelated to this goal should not be their concern. By looking at this argument, we may also postulate that this
is more prevalent in the later rather than the earlier works (Marx 1992, 1996). In looking at Marx it is also fair to say his views changed and many have
not been discredited or discarded. His move away form Hegelian philosophy was replaced with his support of the Adam Smith and classical school of economics. It was this that lead
