a task it may be seen as a necessary requirement for the performance of that task. It is for this reason that some employers will insist that employees take regular
eye tests, and will even pay towards the cost of glasses. Where this is the case the individuals sight may not only harm themselves if not checked and protects, but
may also impact on others. In some instances good sight could mean the difference between life and death, consider a lorry driver outside a childrens school at home time! The
necessity is some professions may be assumed that there are sight requirements; however, this is not always that case. Ironically, one area where there appears to be some controversy is
that of the optometrist. Their role as professionally qualified eye specialists trained to examine eyes for visual deficiencies and also to diagnose and problems that exist, either prescribing lenses or
treatments or making a referral to the appropriate specialist, usually through a GP. The most relevant characteristics of vision that may be cited as important it not the overall vision
but the vision acuity, meaning the acuteness and keenness of vision. In looking at the role and tasks undertaken by an optometrist there is a strong case for a required
level of visual acuity. The need for regular eye tests and the role that they play in prevention of future disease and progressive conditions being halted or controlled has
