to have taken place in the 16th century in a region in Mexico before a man called Juan Diego. The following paper examines some of the visions and significance of
the visions of the Virgin Mary within the cultures she has been seen. The paper utilizes the following works in this discussion: Antonio Valerianos "History of the Miraculous Apparition of
the Virgin of Guadalupe in 1531," and Jeanette Rodriguez "Our Lady of Guadalupe: Faith and Empowerment among Mexican-American Women." The Virgin Mary
One question that could be asked is why the Virgin Mother has chosen to show herself in syncretistic form. This is not necessarily apparent in Valerianos examination or
presentation of the story, but in Rodriguez discussion she states that the image of the Virgin seemed olive skinned and white, European and Mexican. She was many things, and all
things at once. She was heavenly being and physical being as well. From a psychological standpoint one can argue that the ones who saw her saw her in an
image they could understand and comprehend. They would envision her in clothing they comprehended and related to, images of heavenly beings that they were familiar with in some way. If
she had come in a form, lets say, of metal like an alien space traveler they may not have recognized anything about her and thus would be unable to
