Philip II. The date of his birth is uncertain, as are many such dates in antiquity, but many sources believe that this date was chosen because it seems to align
with other major events in his life. It is said, though of course we do not know, that on his birthday the Temple of Artemis went up in flames, which
was a good omen for his future. Philip II was a renowned warrior in his own right, but was overshadowed by his much more famous son. The boy, however, is
alleged to have gotten discouraged when he heard of his fathers conquests, since he believed there would be nothing left for him to do when he finally came of age.
His parents wanted him to have a solid education so their hired the finest tutors they could find. Alexander was a pupil of Aristotle and learned philosophy from him,
and began to incorporate some of the Greek ways into his own life. He was interested in many subjects and loved Homer; he read the Iliad and learned much of
it, modeling himself after the great warrior Achilles. Once Aristotle had taught Alexander all he could, a second tutor, Leonidas, was engaged, but Alexander did not care for him, so
a third man, Lysimachus, was hired. From this tutor Alexander learned about culture and the fine arts such as art and music. Its clear from this that Alexander was not
only highly intelligent, he also had a wide-ranging taste in a number of subject areas. Alexander rose to power rapidly, and an incident when he was 16 confirmed his
abilities. His father was away for an extended period and left the boy in charge. When a Macedonian colony revolted, Alexander marched troops in and put down the rebellion. Only
