that symbolizes the journey of Jesus Christ into the wilderness. Gawain represents the noble code of honor that defines a kings knight, and he must exhibit exemplary behavior at
all times. Like Christ, he must prove that he is not susceptible to temptation, especially of the flesh, so that he can personify his role as a courtly gentleman,
who unselfishly serves God and country. He appears to succeed when he demonstrates all of the honorable qualities of being a gallant knight by winning a beheading contest against
a mysterious opponent known only as the Green Knight. In this Medieval game, whoever strikes the first blow must submit to an identical blow exactly one year later.
Gawain succeeds in beheading the knight with one swing of his sword, but amazingly, the headless body merely walks over, tucks his head under his arm, and retreats to await
his revenge on Sir Gawain. The spectators, stunned by what they have seen, concluded a "phantom and faerie the fold there deemed it" (239-240). Nevertheless, Gawain embarks on
his journey to the Green Chapel, where the rematch will take place, knowing that he could not possibly survive such a blow. At the conclusion of the poem, the
Green Knight informs Gawain that his actions were the direct result of the commands of the conniving goddess Morgan le Fay, which means that along his journey, there have been
a total of three women who have exerted power over him - the Virgin Mary, Lady Bercilak, and mysterious Morgan. While each of these females prove to be most
