castle and cathedral which are of architectural interest. As Sullivan (2004) notes, although the villa was thought originally to have been a retirement home for Maximian, the owner may in
fact have had connections with Africa: Sullivan points out that several of the mosaics depict African subjects, and it is thought that the craftsmen responsible for the mosaics were African.
Seindal (2004) states that the existing building was constructed on what remained of an older one,
sometime in the early fourth century, and probably formed the centre of a much larger complex of buildings. This complex remained in use, with a village developing around it, until
the twelfth century when it was covered by a landslide and the inhabitants relocated. It was virtually forgotten, apart from a few desultory excavations and finds of mosaic fragments, until
1929: later excavations took place in the 1930s and 1950s. The architectural design of the villa is similar to others which have been found in Sicily, all of which boast
the same impressive mosaics. Seindal notes that the villas original owner would have been of the
Roman upper classes, which is indicated by the size of the villa and the type of artwork found within it. It would have been the owners permanent residence, or at
least one in which he spent a considerable amount of time: some of the rooms are residential, but others are not although they were evidently not used for any kind
