Paul Reubens was found masturbating in an adult theater. Sarah Ferguson was found sunbathing topless. Many stars and even royalty are caught off guard and these things seem to disturb
a public that otherwise has all its ducks in a row. Of course, according to theorist Michael Foucault, there is much pretense in prudishness. Whether or not one agrees with
that premise, the authors idea that power and sexuality are more important than its attachment to ethics rings true. In fact, it makes little sense for people without attachment to
dogma to repress their sexuality. There is no reason to become disturbed at sexually charged headlines because in reality, the repression society embraces is an illusion. People do not repress
their sexuality. They just pretend that they do. Foucaults (1980) view of sex is that it was never really repressed. That is a myth. It seems that every generation believes
that they have invented, or reinvented, sex. However, when examining sex historically, this is just not the case. Similarly, there seems to be a gay rights movement today which accentuates
homosexual activity. Yet, through history homosexuality has always been with society. At the same time, homosexuality has existed historically as a sexual practice, but today it is a lifestyle. According
to Foucault (1980), although there is a public repression perhaps, the society has always revolved around sex and there has been a discourse-perhaps somewhat secretive-to allow people to express themselves.
