like Plato or Aristotle. While each might have applauded Socrates for his insights, for example, each view in its own right was tied to a different sort of morality as
well as to different goals. This difference is more than subtle and it certainly had an effect on society and the cultures which existed through the ages. The two different
ways of thinking affected ideas about morality, truth, politics, government, justice, language, education and religion. In essence, ones philosophical position seems to affect everything. That is because values and morality
seem to be the backbone of all societies. The fundamental difference between the Sophists and other famous philosophers of the day like Plato and Aristotle is that the Sophists virtually
excluded scientific ideas and they taught the idea of persuasion instead. To illustrate, one may look at an example of how a courtroom works. Each side of the case has
its own agenda, and purportedly the truth is eked out of the court when each side thoroughly makes a good case. At least, that is what is supposed to happen.
What occurs is that many factors enter the picture. The jury has an influence as does the judge and the political climate. What comes out of a courtroom is not
necessarily truth, but which side argues best. The Sophists prided themselves on the use of persuasion. Hence, the contemporary courtroom would be something for which they would approve. While
many in contemporary society would think that the model is problematic as everyone supports the idea of truth and not persuasion, looking around one can see that this is not
