or dynamic. Discussion Its very difficult to reduce as divisive experience as the Vietnam War to a short paper. Its only possible to touch on a few points, beginning with
the characters reactions to their situation. In The Red Convertible, the two brothers Henry and Lyman are fond of each other but really bond one summer when they drive all
over the country in the red convertible (Erdrich). While theyre gone, a draft notice comes and Henry joins the Marines and is sent to Vietnam; when he comes home, hes
completely changed (Erdrich). Erdrich never describes in detail what happened to him, but its clear that hes suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, but there are no facilities available to take
care of Native American veterans (Erdrich). Lyman tries to get Henry re-interested in life by intentionally damaging the car; Henry finally notices and becomes obsessed with fixing it (Erdrich). But
when the car is fixed they take one last drive: out to the river. Suddenly Henry says hes too hot and jumps in; the last thing he says is "My
boots are filling" and hes gone (Erdrich). Lyman jumps in and searches for him until the sun sets, but Henry is dead; Lyman starts the car and runs it into
the river, a sacrifice to accompany his brother on his journey (Erdrich). Henrys reaction to his experience is PTSD: hes wary of everything and almost totally disengaged from his
