This paper explains why and how this came about. PUBLIC OPINION AND THE VIETNAM WAR Because then-President Richard Nixon used public opinion polls quite extensively as a determining
factor in how the Vietnam War should be played out, there is much debate among scholars that this also caused dissention among the military troops as well as among the
American people (Katz 1997). Because Nixon was seeking an "honorable withdrawal" (Katz 496, 1997) from the war, he felt it would be necessary to keep troops in South Vietnam
until such time as this withdrawal would be possible. Unfortunately public opinion about the Vietnam War did not mesh with the military objectives and government policies in place
at the time. The public was already tired of the Vietnam War and wanted out at any cost. The troops were understandably questioning why they were there and
the lack of support from the home front was not helping their morale. Because of the intense pressure the war was causing both at home and abroad, Nixon used the
"seemingly contradictory methods of troop reduction and applications of intense firepower to coerce the North Vietnamese to accept what he considered honorable peace terms" (Katz 496, 1997). Nixon used
the television media to his advantage as much as possible. It was his intent to convince the public that he was doing what was necessary to get America out
of the war, while at the same time he was increasing the military firepower in an extreme effort to get what he wanted from Vietnam. It was these opposing
