of someone who would otherwise starve. The ends justify the means if a lying promise effects the release of a person held captive. Just war theory suggests that some wars
are justified--even though war is horrific--because in the end, there is peace. For example, there is argument over the current war in the Iraq. Some say that it is worthwhile
because in the end, the people are better off. Others say that the loss of life is just too great for the war to have been justified. Also, Iraq is
in a state of disarray. In using the ends justify the means hypothesis, the Vietnam War is not justified. Even considering that the ends could have meant perhaps a free
world, in retrospect, the ends were not good anyway. Again, even if the outcome were different, the end result of having a world free of Communism is not a good
reason to kill people. First, it should be emphasized that Vietnam was fought during a time when there was fear of Communism. This was a misplaced fear. Communism would fall
on its own, and even if it did not, the idea that it would spread like a disease is ridiculous. It was merely a position that displayed intolerance. It
was after all, unrealistic to believe that the domino theory was valid, and it was further rather idealistic to think that communism could be eradicated. Above all, the Vietnam War
