In examining secondary sources, and comparing and contrasting different authors points of view, and also utilizing first hand primary sources from the era, there is much to be said. A
student writing on this subject who plans to "craft a theme," while comparing and contrasting the ideas of Baritz (1995) and Herring (1994) may choose a variety of topics, one
of which is escalation. Many questions loom large in respect to why the war continued and would become out of control. Many blame Johnson because he escalated the war. Baritz
(1995) and Herring (1994) each have their own opinions on why things went wrong. For Baritz (1985), the Americans never bothered to understand the Vietnamese, and in part, this is
attributable to the fact that Americans thought they were superior. The author claims that the war was lost because the Americans never really understood the cause (Baritz, 1985). One might
add that if the Americans truly understood the problems of the Vietnamese, they would not have entered the territory in such great numbers. Herring (1994) also examines the question as
to why America failed in this war, when it had been successful so many other times. it is true that Americans are not used to failing. The first two world
wars saw victory, and particularly during the second. The United States would soon enjoy superpower status, but Vietnam has always been a thorn in the side of Americans. The conflict
did not show Americas best side and further, it raised compelling questions. Herring (1994) at least in part blames the failure of the war on the fact that there was
