for decades. One of the most significant influencing factors in the policy developments of the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations was the perceived threat of communism and the necessity
of action to prevent its spread. This factor had been present in the development of foreign policy since before the First World War, and led to the perception of
the necessity of force to stomp out its proliferation. The conflict in Vietnam began in the mid 1950s, when the United States recognized a protective need to intervene
in the French colonized Indochina and support pro-democracy governments (Hensley 21). The Vietnamese government under Ngo Dinh Diem supported United States interactions, and hoped that military force would help
reduce developing insurgency (Hensley 21). The massive military action of the late 1960s was determined by a number of political actions and controlled over the course of three different
political administrations demonstrated the perceived threats and the necessity for control within the United States Government (Hensley 21). There are a number of other examples over the past
century of US foreign policies reflecting the fear of the spread of communism and determined policy actions to prevent it. It is clear that for the past decade, United
States nationalism and foreign policy has been based in the perception of a necessary evil. The necessity of conflict, the need for protectionism and the necessity of single, central
figures of evil, from the German Kaiser to the Vietnamese revolutionaries, have been imperative elements in determining American foreign policy over the past century. II.
