of Vietnam. This story varies according to who is responsible for the particular rendition. The story of the soldier is often very different from the story of the
policy maker, the story of the American much different from the story of the Viet Cong, that of the nurse who served much different than the wives that stayed back
home, and that of the draft dodger significantly different than all the rest. The fact that this makes for a multi-layered and multi-textured volume of history is not really
that unique, however, for that is the case of practically every chapter of history. What is unique is that at this point in time we as a society have
finally come to grips with the fact that historical interpretation is so complex. We have finally come to grips with the fact that to truly understand the Vietnam War,
and indeed all chapters of history, one must consider all of the stories and not just those of a select few.
From an American perspective, of course, the most relevant point of the Vietnamese War fall within the years of American involvement, between 1963 and 1973. The Vietnam War,
however, resulted from very complex historical circumstances, circumstances which started long before the first American soldier arrived in Vietnam. The stories surrounding these circumstances too are stories which vary
tremendously according with the telling. Indeed, even the question of who won the Vietnam War is not one for which there is one definitive answer. Many contend that
although the American military definitely had the capability of outmaneuvering and outpowering the Viet Cong, the American political environment made it impossible for us to win the war.
