Maya Ying Lin who, at the time, was only a senior at the Yale School of Architecture. It was "her design was chosen from among more than 1400 submissions, some
by world renown architects. The choice was immediately controversial, not only because of the non-traditional design but because the designer was both a woman and an Asian-American" (Vietnam Veterans Memorial:
Maya Lin, 2004). Lin called the structure a rift in the earth because of its design. It is made up of two walls, approximately 250 feet long. These walls are
set at an angle of 125 degrees, with one wall pointed at the Washington Monument and the other aimed at the Lincoln Memorial. It is made from black granite and
appears to be a structure that stands on its own, architecturally, not having been influenced by some other school or architecture. The following paper examines and analyzes elements of this
particular structure. General Description / Formal Analysis As mentioned, the structure is made from black granite and spans quite a distance. There is a slope to the
structure, however, which serves to further illustrate why Lin called it a rift. It possesses a slope "to the ground from an apex of 10 feet. The walls are inscribed
with the names of the more than 58,000 U.S. men and women who were killed or missing in the Vietnam War" (Vietnam Veterans Memorial [1], 2004). From this we
see that it is elementally very simplistic in structure and in line. There is nothing fancy or confusing about the structure. There is nothing that asks the viewer to understand
any theories or concepts. It is a straight forward pair of walls connected and bearing names of those lost in a war. There are no statues, and no surrounding pieces
