from Teddy Roosevelt and the bear has become an integral part of American culture. The teddy bear began as a simple cuddly bear. However, a variety of modern manufacturers have
created new colors, designs, sizes, mediums, and added imagination to the industry (2002). The Vermont Teddy Bear Company is one company that manufactures a variety of bears and
it is one that is well known today. It began in 1981, started by John Sortino, when his wife first began to sew the nifty bears made on her
own sewing machine; at first, they just sold the bears to friends (2002). The bears were sold by word of mouth. However, John soon began to sell the product
with the use of a push cart in Burlington, Vermont and down the road he would open a factory in Shelburne which is presently the largest manufacturing plant of
hand made bears in North America (2002). This company creates more than 425,000 bears per year and employs close to 275 people(2002). One reason attributed to the substantial growth
for the company is the Bear-Gram portion of the business, something that is marketed as an alternative to sending flowers (2002). Many are familiar with the teddy bear commercials that
promise to deliver a custom made bear to any address rather quickly. Trained Bear Counselors can make suggestions for any size budget or any occasion and bears can be custom
embroidered as well (2002). There are bear tours which also help to promote the business. When going through the factory, visitors can choose the bears fur and then spin
