This paper compares and contrasts the two franchises and argues that there is a striking similarity between Babylon 5 and Deep Space 9, but that the two still stand as distinct entities. Discussion The comparison begins with an overview of the philosophy of the two concepts, and then considers a more direct comparison between Babylon 5 and the Trek series it most closely resembles, Deep Space 9. Its well-known that Gene Roddenberry, creator of the Star Trek universe, wanted to present a science fiction show that would excite and engage viewers, but would also present them with material that made them think. He also wanted to show them a hopeful view of the universe, one in which many species co-existed peacefully, explored the universe by cooperating with one another, and appreciated each others views. It was Roddenberry who came up with the idea of the Prime Directive, the most important of all Starfleet regulations, which forbade earth crews from interfering in the cultural development of other planets. Implicit in this directive is the idea that other cultures have worth and value just as they are, and need no "improvement" from Kirk, Spock, McCoy or any of the other characters who came after them. Star Trek is also known for its progressive point of view. Roddenberry often presented a sort of morality play each week, in which ethical considerations played a large part, or the situation was used to explore a situation on Earth. For instance, the episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" dealt with two aliens locked in a feud because they were half-black and half-white.
