that is in contemporary society called a Cinderella story. It is when a poor girl, or a girl who has been down on her luck, makes good in some way
that employs fates hand. It also usually entails mean step-siblings or at least a nasty stepmother. In fact, the archetype of the mean stepmother seems to persist in society today
and this likely began with the emergence of Cinderella centuries ago. Yet, the original Cinderella story, and how many exist, seem to be the subject of debate. It is said
that there are hundreds of versions of Cinderella (Heiner, 2004). These versions each rely on the idea that a girl suffers from torment by her step-family (Heiner, 2004). While
perhaps the first version is Chinese, many of the later versions would come from Europe. Schafer (2006) reports that the earliest Chinese version emanates from the ninth century. In addition
to the old Chinese version, there are versions to come from Africa and there are Algonquin versions as well. These are Cinderella stories but are really not the ones commonly
known today with evil stepsisters and so forth. In essence, Cinderella has become a plot type as opposed to a story of its own. But there is a version of
Cinderella that is commonly known. This version, or compilation of versions, contains fundamental elements of recognition such a the loss of a glass slipper, a handsome prince to salvage things,
a wicked stepmother and so forth. These elements are necessary to tell the tale, but there are many versions of the theme. By the time the version that is well
known came out, many have attributed the plot to other Cinderella stories and so it is hard for anyone to lay claim to having the true original Cinderella version. Cinderella
