and many more. And yet, Franklin was known best for his common sense and curiosity as opposed to being regarded as any exemplary intellectual. Brilliant but
not intellectual, principled but not priggish, Franklin was an original thinker whose genius lay less in profound thoughts than in practical ideas and homely wisdom. As he rose in station
from impoverished young printers apprentice to venerable statesman and man of means, he hobnobbed with aristocrats, royals, and some of the greatest thinkers of the Enlightenment; but he never lost
touch with the common man whose standard he carried proudly throughout his long, eventful life (Isaacson, 2003). It is evident then that
Franklins brilliance was of the practical sort and in this way many of todays modern self-help books echo this sentiment. For instance, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
is a self-help book that focuses on tangible, practical ways of initiating change. The "seven habits" are not abstract ideas but rather practical suggestions for ways to improve ones
life. Ben Franklin was similar in his approach: no focus on esoteric concepts but rather dedication to common sense approaches that were valuable instruments of change.
Who Moved My Cheese is another example of a very popular self-help book on the market. This book essentially compels readers to
