Participating in womens studies is one way that women
around the world can become enlightened as to the social forces that have been in place for centuries that predetermined womens roles in their society. Those forces are hardly
a matter of the past. Indeed, they continue to influence gender relations. While many of those influences are perceived as negative, it is important to understand the history
and the reasoning behind their inception. Womens studies are exercises in critical thinking in regard to the diversity of the human experience. They facilitate the dissemination of knowledge,
encourage communication and a higher ethical regard for our social responsibility. The reality that is honed home in courses in womens studies is
that men and women are different creatures. They operate differently in most if not all of our social arenas. From a political perspective, for example, there are subtle
if not strong differences in policy preferences. It might be contended, in fact, that a different agenda is in place for women as opposed to men. Women it
seems are on the whole more interested in legislation involving the family and such issues as education and welfare than are men. There are exceptions of course but this
is a general rule of thumb. From more of a personal perspective womens sexuality, their parenting, and even their spirituality is affected by
their gender and the forces that interact to shape that gender. Even our role in the workplace and the persistent wage discrepancies which characterize those roles are impacted by
