not a particular medical treatment is more effective than an alternative treatment at eradicating a particular disease. While one might have access to records indicating the outcomes of a number
of trials with both treatments, such information is ultimately "useless" until it is subjected to analysis, and quality inferences are made about the significance of trends suggested by the available
data. One fundamental way to do such is through the process of hypothesis testing. This paragraph will explore the basic tenets of hypothesis testing, as well as its utility both
to research and "real world" applications. This paragraph helps the student introduce the concept of hypothesis testing. When one does work by the scientific method, one must follow a strict
order of operations. Firstly, one observes trends or available data, and based on inference, formulates a hypothesis regarding that data. For instance, one might look at surgical outcomes and suggest
the hypothesis that medical treatment A is superior to medical treatment B in treating Schooleys Disease. An experiment is then designed to test the validity of this hypothesis under controlled
conditions. Hypothesis testing in statistics is very similar, but has the specific utility of testing whether or not an occurrence is "statistically significant" or likely to occur by chance. For
example, even if treatment A outperforms treatment B in the majority of observable cases, it is still possible that this could be a fluke, occurring through chance or other external
factors unrelated to the quality of the treatment. Hypothesis testing could be used to determine conclusively whether or not the observed superiority of treatment A really indicates a superior treatment.
The first step in hypothesis testing is to convert a verbal problem statement into a numerical problem statement. This is done so that the problem can be reduced to
