children as a bed time story. There are similar characters, evil stepmothers and wicked adults, stereotyped witches and the hero or heroine is usually a child. However, this is a
very modern view of fairy tales, fairytales have not always been this way. The modern images of fairy tales may be traced as an evolution from the beginning in oral
traditions and the gradual transformation though the different collections. The recording of fairytales created more static storys less adaptable, the most famous collectors were the Brother Grimm, but they were
not the first. Perrault may be retraced as one of the fist to start recording fairytales in writing (Darnton, 1980). The modern story as we see it today owes a
great deal these authors for preserving stories, but also the later authors such as Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen was one of the first to transform the fairytale into a
childrens story with happier ending and a more comfortable patter of reading. The Grimms have been interested in languages and the preservation of the Germanic culture, Andersen was adapting for
the reader. Despite the changes he made in the text and the perspective many of the dame messages and themes remained. This is true even of the fairy stories that
originated with Han Christian Andersen, such as the Ugly Duckling (Zipes, 1985). The use of fairy tales can be seen as predating
the ages of common literacy. They were tales told by peasants reflecting their view of the world. The sorties would reflects the issues pertinent to that society, this is seen
in stories such as Hansel and Gretel and Sleeping Beauty. These stories are though to have originated in the middle ages and as such indicate the concerns, such as food,
