and that which existed just a few decades ago is the abundance of multicultural perspectives that exist in the workplace. While organizations in the past might well have been homogenized
institutions in terms of the cultural roles occupied by workers, todays organizations almost invariably employ a wider variety of individuals from more diverse backgrounds. This is so for a number
of reasons. For instance, affirmative action laws now require that employers maintain specific proportions of racial representation in their workforce. Also, globalization has now led to many more organizations operating
branches overseas, which in turn opens the door for a variety of cultural perspectives to intermingle in the workplace. On the whole, this is a good thing, as it promotes
cultural diversity in commerce and provides for a more diverse and robust range of input and innovation from workers. However, certain challenges are presented as a result of this diversity.
For instance, organizational "cultures" must consider the unique perspectives and values of each of the cultures represented in the organization. Additionally, workers from differing cultural backgrounds might face difficulties in
working with one another due to fundamentally differing cultural values. This is why "diversity training" has become such a critical aspect of modern business; by teaching employees to overcome the
