The "Cultural Revolution" (CR) is one of the most heavily debated political and ideological programs in the history of the world. Established by Mao Tse-Tung as a reaction against the perceived re-establishment of capitalist favor in the political structure of the country in response to internal and external pressures for China to fully institute modernized industrial practices. Ostensibly a policy intended to expand industrial practices into rural areas for the purpose of achieving a more functional, competitive, and industrialized socialist framework to repel capitalist influence, the movement has instead largely been characterized in a manner that emphasizes the institutional violence committed by the Mao regime and associated militant forces during the period of the Cultural Revolution. Indeed, there was a great deal of violence during this time, especially the widely-documented destruction of cultural artifacts by the youth-driven Red Guard and the violent suppression of student uprisings at Tiananmen Square. However, with a realistic appraisal, the legacy of the Cultural Revolution hasnt been entirely negative. Especially in regards to education reform and the expansion of education and industry to rural areas of the country, the Cultural Revolution managed to generate some positive consequences for China.
