a whole operates. The concept of the value chain was developed by Michael Porter and has five main areas; inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and service (Thompson,
1998). These are then links to the support activities which are necessary but do not directly add value but do add value (Thompson, 1998, Mintzberg et al, 1998). For
companies such as Fedex and UPS there are similar patterns in the value chain. In terms of the inbound logistics these are the activities that involve bringing in the parcels
and packaged and their storage before they are transported and the internal transportation system. Both companies have systems where a customer may arrange for the packages to be collected or
will bring it into a collection point or depot (UPS, 2003, FedEx, 2003). They both provide customers with the packaging to send their goods, which is provided free of charge
and the process begins with the use of a tracking number, which is allocated to the package to follow it until it is delivered at the destination. UPS have proliferated
a message of being faster and seeking to different their service to attract business, but this is achieved mostly though the support activity of marketing (Kotler, 2003). Both companies have
string marketing as a support activity. The next stage of the value chain is that of operations. For many companies this is the creation of goods (Thompson, 1998). However,
for these delivery companies it may be seen as the transportation of the goods between location, as this is their primary activity. UPS appear to have an advantage as they
