That had monopolized classical conditioning as well as operant conditioning in creating ways to enhance, suppress, or modify problem behaviors like phobias and anxieties (1999). The fields founder is Neal Miller who developed biofeedback in order to control various internal biological systems, something designed to improve individual health (1999). In a biofeedback session, the patient is attached to instruments designed to measure physical and physiological responses. The fight or flight response, that is responsible to a large extent for headaches and other maladies, is something that can be controlled with the use of biofeedback training. The patient is given instructions to relax through visualization and other techniques. The biofeedback instruments provide the psychologist with feedback on how the individual is doing in controlling his or her responses to stress. The idea is that through these sessions, the individual will eventually be able to control his or her reactions to stress which affects heart rate, blood pressure, and so forth. By measuring responses, the patient may be told whether or not they are relaxed. Certain physical symptoms such as crinkling a forehead or grinding teeth are obvious sings of stress. When an individual is engaged in biofeedback, he or she is given the tools or instructions necessary to curb their negative physical responses to stressors. Although an individual can control his or her responses to stress, biofeedback is generally used in conjunction with counseling. While it is desirable that an individual control the fight or flight responses to stress, another aspect of the sessions goes to the minimization of stress in an overall sense.
