Compaq committed to preserving it at least for a decade after acquiring its creator Digital Equipment Company (DEC), and Hewlett-Packard appears to be honoring that commitment. Equipment Corporation (DEC) was known for its superior products in the 1970s and 1980s. DECs senior management made a crucial misstep, however, when it determined that yes, personal computers could be good for offloading tasks such as word processing and charting, but they would never hold any significant place in business computing. DEC chose to remain wedded to the mainframe as its primary product, and it failed to alter that strategy even after it became apparent that there would be greater use of personal computers in business after all. The result of that crucial misstep in the next decade would be that DEC would be acquired by Compaq and so cease to exist. Before it began shooting itself in its collective corporate foot, it designed and released its Virtual Memory System (VMS) operating system in the late 1970s. VMS has undergone some changes since that beginning so long ago, of course. One cosmetic change is that its name was changed to "Open VMS" at a time that the word "open" was being added to many pre-existing operating systems (Article 73391, 2001). Originally designed to run on the DEC VAX, OpenVMS VAX "is a 32-bit, multitasking, multiprocessing virtual memory operating system" (Article 73391, 2001). OpenVMS Alpha is the 64-bit version. Of course the Internet did not exist (at least not commercially) at the time that VMS was developed, and those wishing to use VMS today to access the Internet are required to make alterations that Hewlett-Packard retains at its website since its acquisition of Compaq Computer.
