Taylor has been mentioned as an old theorist and he was concerned with scientific management which was sometimes administered at the expense of employees. In terms of scientific management, Frederick Winslow Taylor was one of the original theorists and is the management thinker that Harrington (1999) claims that humanists love to hate. Why? His system of management purportedly dehumanizes workers and reduces management to a mere measurement (1999). Ever since Taylors methods of "working smarter" brought him fame at the turn of the century, the societys appetite for greater productivity has been insatiable (Harrington, 1999). Fast forward to the twenty-first century, and the old models that relied on getting as much work from a worker has gone out the window. Today, most management theory relies on providing carrots for the workers, motivating them to perform well and making sure their basic needs are taken care of by offering insurance, an adequate salary and counseling in some circumstances. Newer models do include such attention to the workers needs, but they vary of course. Theory and research in respect to HRM and innovation has been firmly rooted in the configuration approach and the theoretical perspective suggests that there is a "strategy of innovation" (Conway & McMackin, 2001). Some firms adopt the idea in respect to competitive advantage and an example that is often referenced is Miles & Snows (1984 as cited in Conway & McMackin, 2001) .
