the political unrest of this era, that the political philosophy that Machiavelli espouses in The Prince argues for the indiscriminate use of power, as he observed that it is power,
not social justice, that decides who rules. It is interesting to speculate what part of Machiavellis philosophy fits the modern world and what advice should automatically be discarded. This poses
the question, as a new ruler, what part of The Prince, if any, would you follow. If a prince acquires a State in which the "languages, usages, and laws"
are different from hi own, Machiavelli indicates that ruling it and retaining it becomes much more difficult. He writs that two things must be accomplished. First of all, the "ancient
line of Princes" must be destroyed (Machiavelli, chapter 3, paragraph 3). In other words, the entirety of the former ruling family must be murdered. Secondly, "no change (should) be made
in respect of laws or taxes" (Machiavelli, chap. 3, para.3). The conquering prince is also advised to live in the country that has been conquered. While the advice rationalizing
murder should be ignored, a modern ruler might consider keeping local laws, and living in the land that over which one rules. The ruler should adapt to the culture and
customs of the people, not the other way around, and develop an understanding of the citizenry that can only come by living among the populace. Machiavellis advice to a ruler
to have his finger on the pulse of the people is good. He advises this so that the ruler can stop uprisings, but it nevertheless remains good advice. In
